Hello everyone. My name is _____ and I’m powerless over marijuana. Welcome to this open meeting of the “Marijuana Anonymous World Phone Meetings”or MAWPM (mahw-pum) group. Our website, ma-phone.org, hosts three independent MA groups. We meet daily at 7 am, 10 am, Noon and 8 pm, and also on Wednesday and Friday at 10 pm US Eastern time zone.

Serenity Prayer

Before the Serenity Prayer, we will take a moment of silence to ask our Higher Power for a message of recovery today.

[Chair: Pause for 15-30 seconds.]

Thank you.

Make sure you are unmuted to participate. The Serenity Prayer starts with the word, God, and that’s the Higher Power of your own understanding.

We will do the call-and-response version, where I say a line and you repeat it.

God, grant me the serenity . . .

[Chair: pause]

To accept the things I cannot change . . .

[Chair: pause]

The courage to change the things I can, . . .

[Chair: pause]

And the wisdom to know the difference.

[Chair: pause]

I am now putting our call in Q&A mode. To actively participate, press *6-1. When the system tells you, “You may now ask your question,” that means it’s time for you to speak. Make sure to unmute your phone before speaking.

[Chair: Put meeting into Q&A mode for the entire meeting until the closing Serenity Prayer by pressing *01.

Please be sure to mute when someone else is speaking and un-mute when you talk.]

I am Responsible.

Whenever anyone, anywhere, reaches out for help,

. . . I want the hand of Marijuana Anonymous to be there.

And for that: I am responsible.

If you can be of service, please prepare to read one of the Twelves (The Steps, Traditions, Questions, Promises or Principles) or Our Awakening, and enter the queue by pressing *6-1. These readings can be found on our website, ma-phone.org, under Readings & Resources, Meeting Readings. I will check the queue for readers after the following passages.

MA Preamble

Marijuana Anonymous is a fellowship of people who share our experience, strength, and hope with each other that we may solve our common problem and help others to recover from marijuana addiction.

The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop using marijuana. This is to adhere to the singleness of purpose concept, but many of us have found that the only way that we can keep our sobriety is to abstain from all mind and mood altering chemicals, including alcohol.

There are no dues or fees for membership. We are self-supporting through our own contributions. MA is not affiliated with any religious or secular institution or organization and has no opinion on any outside controversies or causes. Our primary purpose is to stay free of marijuana and to help the marijuana addict who still suffers achieve the same freedom. We can do this by practicing our suggested Twelve Steps of recovery and by being guided as a group by our Twelve Traditions.

[Optional] Who is a marijuana addict?

We, who are marijuana addicts, know the answer to this question. Marijuana controls our lives! We lose interest in all else; our dreams go up in smoke. Ours is a progressive illness often leading us to addictions to other drugs, including alcohol. Our lives, our thinking, and our desires center around marijuana – scoring it, dealing it, and finding ways to stay high.

The following comes from the Forward to our basic text, “Life With Hope: A Return to Living through the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions of Marijuana Anonymous” (page ix).

“How can we tell you how to recover? We cannot. All we can do is share with you our own experiences and recovery through the Twelve Steps of Marijuana Anonymous.”

“The Twelve Traditions are the guidelines for the fellowship of Marijuana Anonymous and the basic ideas, which unify our groups. “

[Required] I will now check the queue for volunteers to read one of the Twelves . . . .

[Chair: Press *02 to check for volunteers.]

Hi, what would you like to read?

Thank you ______ for your service.

[Chair: Press *02 to check for 2nd reader. If no one is in the queue, skip second reading. Allow only two readings.]

Hi, what would you like to read?

Thank you ______ for your service.

[Chair: After final reading, press *04 to mute the last caller.]

[Welcome Newcomers]

Before we begin sharing, we want to welcome any newcomers to the meeting. Newcomers include anyone new or returning to the MA phone lines. You’re welcome to introduce yourself by first name. There will be time for sharing later. Include your location and day count, if you want. Feel free to listen, if that’s more comfortable.

We will allow newcomers time to press *6-1 to join the queue.

[Chair: Pause for 5-10 seconds, then press *02 to check for newcomers and welcome them individually.]

It’s good to have a pen and paper ready to write down phone numbers when shared at the end of the meeting to make outreach calls. Whether you choose to share today or stay to listen, we’re glad you’re here and hope you keep coming back.

What happens at an MA meeting?

People discuss their problems with marijuana, what they did to recover, and what life is like now. We have found that as a group, we can achieve for ourselves results which, as individuals, we failed repeatedly.

We suggest newcomers attend 6 meetings or more to help determine if this group might be right for you. Please stay on the line after the meeting to ask questions, receive support, and learn about recovery resources.

[Placeholder for newcomer link on website.]

Please join us Wednesdays at noon Eastern time for our newcomer meeting.

[Chair: If you, the chairperson, cannot stay after the meeting to greet newcomers, then ask for a volunteer with 90 days or more.]

Meeting Norms

To maintain the serenity of the meeting, here are some guidelines:

· These phone meetings are managed using Q&A mode.

· You can actively participate in the meeting by joining the queue and removing yourself with *6-1.

· When you share, please introduce yourself by first name. If you’re comfortable, include your location and your day count.

· Please keep your sharing to 4 minutes. I will give a notice when you have one minute left. Please confirm you’ve heard the notice. There’s no need to stop abruptly; just wind down your comments in the next minute.

· After everyone has had a chance to share, second shares may be asked for.

· Note that you can use *2 to hear a current count of participants.

MARIJUANA ANONYMOUS uses the basic 12 Steps of Recovery founded by Alcoholics Anonymous, because it has been proven that the 12 Step Recovery program works!

We do not engage in crosstalk, which we define as giving someone advice, mentioning their name, or referring to their share. I will follow this guideline as well. This provides a safe environment for all. We encourage you to speak to others and ask questions after the meeting.

Meeting Focus

[Chair: If “topic discussion,” please come prepared with ONE topic related to recovery from marijuana addiction, and invite the group to offer up ONE topic for a maximum of TWO topics for discussion.

Closing (at about 50 minutes into the mtg)

That’s all the time we have for sharing during the meeting. The opinions expressed by individual members do not represent MA as a whole. Let there be no gossip or criticism of one another. What you’ve heard at the meeting is confidential and should go no further.

Please stay on the line after we close to exchange phone numbers, ask questions, and join in fellowship.

Our 7th Tradition states that MA has no dues or fees. We are self-supporting through our own contributions. For information on how to contribute, please go to Meetings & Contacts, Tradition Seven on the ma-phone.org website.

Please give what you can, but if you can give nothing for now,

Keep Coming Back!

It’s now time to get in the queue by pressing *6-1, if you have not yet shared, to claim your seat. This means announcing your first name and, if you’d like, your location and day count. This helps us all know that we are not alone in this recovery process. Please join the queue now to claim your seat.

[Chair: press *02 to check the queue for seat-claimers.]

If you have an MA-related announcement, please press *6-1 to join the queue and I’ll ask for those in a minute.

· Please look on our website, ma-phone.org, for important announcements, found under the Readings & Resources menu tab. All members are invited to our monthly MAWPM Business Meeting at 1:10PM on the second Sunday of each month. The next meeting is April 12.  The positions of Business Meeting Chairperson and Secretary are available. Please e-mail agenda-mawpm@ma-phone.org if you are interested.

· See our website, under Meetings & Contacts, Meeting Schedules to learn about meeting topics and specific meetings for LGBTQ members; as well as women only and men only meetings.

· Informal fellowship is available daily at 4:20 PM Eastern time on this line. To increase your chance to connect, please stay on the line for at least 5 minutes. Speaker tapes will be played daily at 1:30 PM Eastern and after the 4:20 PM fellowship.

· Service is an important part of recovery. If you have 60 days of continuous sobriety and are interested in being a chairperson, ask me how after the meeting. Meetings every Friday at 10AM and every other Thursday at noon Eastern meeting are available.

[Chair: list of open meetings can be found here Chairpersons List]

If you don’t have Internet access, ask me to read the announcements after the meeting.

I’ll check the queue to see if there are additional announcements.

[Chair: Check the queue with *02.]

Thank you to everyone who provided service, those who shared, and those listening. [Optional: read names] Welcome again to the newcomer(s). We’re glad you’re here. Keep coming back!

There will be a phone number exchange and time for questions, additional shares, and fellowship after the meeting.

Our book, “Life With Hope”, states, “We are responsible for our own recovery”. We encourage members to develop a support network by getting phone numbers and calling people you feel comfortable with. We work recovery for ourselves, not by ourselves. Connection is the opposite of addiction.

Thank you for letting me be of service.

Serenity Prayer

I will now take us out of Q&A mode and put us into mute all mode while we observe a moment of silence to reflect on the message we’ve heard today.

[Chair: Press *03 to end Q&A, then press *5 to mute all. MAKE SURE TO LISTEN FOR THE SYSTEM TO SAY, “All callers are muted BUT CAN UNMUTE THEMSELVES.”]

[Chair: Pause for 15-30 seconds.]

Thank you. You will need to unmute yourself by pressing *6 to participate in the Serenity Prayer.

[Chair: Pause for 10-15 seconds]

Let’s do the all-together “we” version, starting now...

God, grant us the serenity . . .

To accept the things we cannot change . . .

The courage to change the things we can . . .

And the wisdom to know the difference.

THANK YOU, EVERYONE! The meeting is concluded.

[Optional per 12/8/19 Group Conscience]

Keep coming back. It works!

[Chair: Allow time for everyone to thank you for the meeting.]

If you would like to share your phone number in this public space, please join the queue.

Anyone who is available to be a sponsor or temporary sponsor, may mention that as you share your number. Sponsorship enhances recovery through one-on-one guidance on working the Twelve Steps and applying them in your life. We suggest you listen for those who “have what you want”.

If an outreach call makes you feel uncomfortable, consider ending contact with that individual.

I will now put us in Q&A mode, so please join the queue by pressing *6-1 to share your number.

[Chair: Press *01 to go back to Q&A. Press *02 to check for numbers.]

Do any newcomers have any questions at this time?

[Chair: Press *02 to take newcomer questions. If you do not know the answer, ask others to get in the queue to share their experience, strength, and hope.]

[Chair: For meeting attendance verification, attendee must e-mail date & time of meeting with chairperson's name and topic discussed to attendance@ma-phone.org within 48 hours of meeting.]

Would anyone who didn’t get a chance to share during the meeting like to take a share?

[Chair: Press *02 to allow additional sharing.]

[Chair: When queue is empty, end Q&A mode by pressing *03.]

It is now time for fellowship.

[Chair: Optional - give prompts for recovery discussion in fellowship if line is quiet, e.g., “What are you doing for your recovery today?”, “Does anyone have any challenges they would like to hear experience, strength and hope about?”]
